New Faces and Changes

We are sad to announce that Amanda Parish is leaving our clinic but excited to add that she will be starting her own practice in Janesville. Her new practice will be located at Park Place Chiropractic, 1831 W Court St Janesville, WI 53548, (608) 754-7463 and her website is the following: http://www.nccaomdiplomates.com/amandaparish/

We have enjoyed having Amanda in our clinic and wish her continued success at her new practice!

As you may have noticed, schedules have been booking up quickly. In order to best meet the needs of our clinic we have hired two new acupuncturists – Nhung Viet (V) and Susan! You can read both of their bios below. As always you are welcome to book with any practitioner at any time. Here is the updated schedule and when each practitioner will be seeing patients:

Nhung Viet Nguyen, ND, LAc

Viet holds a strong belief in natural healing. She grew up in a household that embraced and practiced both traditional Vietnamese and Chinese medicine and understands the importance of having good health. With her holistic belief, she attended Bastyr University near Seattle, Washington and received a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine.

Viet has been able to work in several community clinics and travel around the globe to practice and study acupuncture. While in China, she witnessed the positive effects of increased frequency of acupuncture treatment on patients and realized the importance of making acupuncture easily accessible and affordable in America.

Viet likes that acupuncture is simple, effective, and feels that everyone could benefit from it. She is excited to be living in the Midwest, being closer to her family and being a part of Milwaukee Community Acupuncture.

Susan Johnston, LAc

Susan came to the profession of acupuncture in a non-traditional way. Upon finishing her undergraduate studies in biology with a pre-med focus she realized she no longer wanted to go to medical school and become part of a healthcare system run by insurance companies more interested in the bottom line than patient care. Still wanting to do something related to healthcare she searched the internet for something encompassing her two favorite subjects; Chinese and Medicine. What she found was a 3,000 year old tradition of healthcare that could be practiced privately allowing the practitioner to form a relationship with her patients while treating a vast amount of internal medicine complaints. This was exactly what she was looking for and so she set off to California to study Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine.

Susan has been practicing Chinese Medicine in private practice since 2006. She is excited about being able to also work with patients in a community acupuncture setting. It is a gift to be able to provide affordable healthcare to people in the Milwaukee area. Susan has seen the positive effects of acupuncture given in a community setting while as an intern, working in China, and as a volunteer in New Orleans after Katrina.

Susan feels it is important to expose as many people as possible to acupuncture so they can experience firsthand how powerful the medicine can be. She takes pride in helping to dispel any fear or confusion patients may have about treatment. It is of utmost importance to her that each patient feels comfortable and safe during treatment and confident about the course of the treatment.

Meet our new Licensed Acupuncturist, Amanda Parish

Milwaukee Community Acupuncture is pleased to introduce you to our newest acupuncturist Amanda Parish, L.Ac.!

Amanda realized her passion for healthcare while working in a previous career processing paper work for disability claims. She had a desire to do more than just process the papers, she wanted to help by healing. Due to the stress of her job a coworker suggested she try Acupuncture. Amanda enjoyed the treatments so much that she knew a career change was in order. Amanda has always had a passion for helping others and once she learned more about Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine she knew this was her calling. Holistic, natural medicine has always been important to Amanda and this field exemplifies that. That led Amanda to the College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Northwestern Health Sciences to begin her studies.

Going into this profession, Amanda saw the need for affordable care. While in school, Amanda interned in a variety of clinical settings including a clinic that offered community style treatments for patients. It was here that she saw how the community style treatments could benefit a large number of patients at an affordable cost. The incredible improvements these patients saw in their health and overall well being solidified the importance of continuing this style of Acupuncture in her career.

Amanda is very excited to be joining Amy and Olivia in their mission to serve the community with excellent care.

Amanda’s credentials include:
Masters of Oriental Medicine from CAOM at Northwestern Health Sciences
Wisconsin State licensed Acupuncturist
Board certified in Acupuncture by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
Advanced studies at TianJin University in TianJin, China in Acupuncture & Moxibustion and TuiNa

Amanda will be seeing patients on Tuesday evenings from 4-8pm and Fridays from 2pm- 6pm.  This makes our current practitioner schedule as follows:

Healthy, Happy Holidays

By Rachel Mau, MS, RD, CD

Tis the season for a string a holiday gatherings with loved ones, often centered around a festive meal. Cherished family recipes return to our tables, and holiday parties offer an enticing array of sweets and treats. So how to enjoy the season while still maintaining a healthy lifestyle? Here are a few tips:

  • Pick the best and leave the rest: When faced with a dizzying spread, ignore the foods you could have anytime and choose a few of the foods that are special holiday favorites. Serve yourself a reasonable portion and savor every bite.
  • Practice premeditated laziness: Stock your fridge and pantry with healthful foods for easy meals and snacks at home during the busy holiday season. Try pre-chopping your vegetables as soon as you return from the grocery store so that they’re ready for an easy snack (raw or blanched with hummus) or meal (stir-fried with a lean meat or cubed tofu, served with your favorite whole grain like brown rice or quinoa).
  • Portion control and recipe roundup: Avoid overindulgence by knowing that you can have more another time. If you discover a special new food, rather than over-eating in the moment, see if you can get the recipe so that you could have another taste at another time.
  • Incorporate physical activity into your gatherings: get your group walking (indoors or out), ice skating, snow shoeing, skiing, or dancing.
  • Eat with gratitude: pause and give thanks for the food and the company.
  • And finally…contribute your own fabulous, healthy dish to your next gathering. For one example, see below.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Shredded Brussels Sprouts with Pecans and Mustard Seeds

Brussels sprouts are high in dietary fiber, beta-carotene, potassium, folate, and Vitamins C and K. Cooking them lightly, as in the recipe below, helps preserve isothicyanates (which act in anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-oxidant pathways) to maximize the benefits they can provide. Quick and easy, this recipe has converted many self-proclaimed Brussels sprouts haters.

Ingredients

1/3 cup pecans, coarsely chopped

2 containers (10 ounces each) fresh Brussels sprouts, ends trimmed

½ Tbs butter

2 tsp olive oil

1 Tbs yellow mustard seeds

1 to 2 Tbs fresh lemon juice

Coarse salt and ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread pecans on a rimmed baking sheet and toast until fragrant and lightly browned, about 10 minutes; set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, with the shredding disk of a food processor, shred Brussels sprouts (if you don’t have a food processor, halve and thinly slice with a chef’s knife). In a large nonstick skillet, heat butter and oil over medium-high heat. Add mustard seeds and cook, stirring occasionally, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add Brussels sprouts and cook, tossing occasionally until tender and beginning to brown, 7 to 9 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in lemon juice, and season with salt and pepper. Serve topped with pecans.

Winter Newsletter 2011

Hello and happy winter! Our clinic is growing, and with growth comes change. We have a few changes here at the clinic that we’d like to share with you.

We are sad to say that Denise, our front desk receptionist is leaving us. She will be moving back to Chicago at the end of this month and will be pursuing some very exciting new opportunities with her art. We will really miss her and know you will too.

With that said, we would like to introduce our newest receptionist, Haley. Haley is a fellow Bay Viewer who will be joining Kate up at the front desk to help with all of your scheduling needs.

Our team here at MCA is growing in other ways as well. With our ever increasing demand for appointments, we have decided it’s time to add another acupuncturist to the team. We are currently taking resumes. If you know anyone who is interested, please send them our way!

If you haven’t noticed the special offer box on the website, January is our Patient Appreciation month. From now until the end of the month we are offering one complimentary treatment for those patients who have been with us since 2009. This offer expires February 1st, so make sure to schedule your appointment as soon as possible as we’ve been filling up in advance!

Be well,

It’s Cold and Flu Season

Cold and flu season has started early this year!  Did you know that acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can treat colds and flus?  There are certain acupuncture points and herbal formulas that can help the body recover from an illness faster.  It is beneficial to come in right away so if you think you’re coming down with something make an appointment as soon as possible.  A lot of people wonder how acupuncture can treat these ailments.  Check out this article called “A Sneeze from the Breeze: Colds and Influenza According to Chinese Medicine” for a brief explanation.
